The Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DFTD) is a fatal infectious cancer that affects Tasmanian Devils and has caused population declines of up to 90% over the past 20 years.

The tumor grows rapidly and can often affect the animal’s ability to feed, resulting in starvation. It is spread through direct contact between individuals, by biting in particular. Unfortunately, there is currently no known cure for the disease, although scientists are exploring the potential genetic modification of the species to be more resistant to tumors. This could offer hope for the future of the Tasmanian Devil species.
